Valuable Scientific Research on the Superb Parrot
The Superb Parrot (Polytelis swainsonii) is an increasingly recognisable and charismatic species found in south-eastern Australia, with many breeding colonies favouring box-gum grassy woodlands. The mobility of the species and the dependence on limited resources (i.e., tree hollows) presents several challenges for study, monitoring, and effective conservation management. Consequently, the Superb Parrot is listed as Vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. Despite this status, significant knowledge gaps remain in the species’ ecology. The expansion and continued monitoring of Superb Parrot reproductive output and movement offers critical knowledge to maximise conservation gains and secure current breeding populations.
The PhD project is led by McLean Cobden and supervised by Dr Laura Rayner, Dr Dejan Stojanovic, Professor Adrian Manning, and Professor Rob Heinsohn from The Australian National University (ANU). The project aims to address important knowledge gaps by utilising research and monitoring methodology established as part of a monitoring program in the ACT, this project has expanded monitoring to across the species breeding range. Where nesting activity is confirmed, nests are monitored using motion-activated cameras and detailed data on reproductive output are collected (nest survival, clutch and brood size, nestling body condition, and genetic material). Measuring breeding output in this high level of detail allows researchers to identify key threats to species persistence which may differ between breeding colonies, regions, and land tenures. Additionally, movement data on breeding adults are collected using GPS-satellite tags where possible. This has already revealed key trends in Superb Parrot inter-annual movements and distributions. This study is the first to utilise this technology on the species, and it offers unparalleled opportunities to better understand its movement ecology.
Woodbury Ridge will provide valuable observational reports and evidence of Superb Parrot breeding and nesting behaviour. This study will contribute significantly to the ongoing national conservation research in Superb Parrot ecology, and the team behind Woodbury Ridge are proud to be part of this valuable scientific research.
